APDVS Lifetime Achievement in Education Award Winner, Dr. Jack Cronenwett: History of the APDVS, the vascular integrated residency, and the VQI

Dr. Jack Cronenwett was recently awarded the first Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the Association for Program Directors in Vascular Surgery (APDVS). We are very excited to have Dr. Cronenwett join us to give us his perspective on the history of the APDVS, the Vascular Integrated Residency, and the Vascular Quality Initiative.

Dr. Cronenwett is an Active Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He was Chair of the section of Vascular Surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center from 1984 to 2007. He is a past president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, as well as the New England Society for Vascular Surgery. He served as the medical director for the vascular surgery study group of New England from 2002 to 2014, and was the medical director of the SVS Patient Safety Organization (also known as the Vascular Quality Initiative) at its creation in 2011.

He is also a past member of the Residency Review Committee for Surgery for the ACGME.

In that role, he developed the first program requirements for integrated residency for the RRC, and in 2007, Dartmouth was one of the first three programs to create an integrated vascular residency.

He is editor emeritus of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and  the seventh and eighth additions of Rutherford's Vascular Surgery. He is the current editor of Vascular Decision Making.

In 2016, Dr. Cronenwett received the lifetime achievement award of the society for vascular surgery. He is the inaugural recipient for the 2021 APDVS lifetime achievement award.
